Five Major Painting Styles

Each painting style has its own qualities and each one differs from the others. The following points illustrate the 5 major painting styles in mankind's history.

The Abstract Style:

In this painting style you wouldn't have any object. In fact, the painter focuses on using imagination and colors to create an artistic piece. There are many masterpieces of this style. As the name suggests, the painting would be completely abstract. Those who don't understand these paintings think of them as a few color patterns.

However, the painter leaves the interpretation of the painting to the audience. You can choose to see your own imagination ingrained in these paintings.

Some of the renowned artists in this painting style are Pablo Picasso and Wassily Kandisky.

The Abstraction Style:

It might seem similar to the abstract art but there's a slight difference between the two. The previous one focused on creating a simple imagery of one's imagination. You wouldn't see any real objects in abstract art. In the abstraction style, you'd see patterns of colors.

Lines and colors play a major role in abstraction art. The painter goes into detail and removes the realism from the objects around us. The product you see would be how the painter interprets the object in his or her own view. Thus, there might be a different image for a single object.

Georgia O'Keeffe and Jackson Pollock are two of the most renowned artists who employed this art style.

The Realism Style:

One of the most popular art styles, realism focuses on showing the true details of the subject but in a stylized manner. Therefore, you'd see a real object in the image but it would be modified by the painter to suit the painting. From a distance you might not be able to tell the modification or stylization but upon close inspection, one can notice the differences.

It's one of the most historically influential art styles. That's because it garnered popularity during the Renaissance. Mona Lisa is the most popular example of this art style.

Two of the biggest artists in realism were Édouard Manet and Gustave Courbet.

The Photorealism Style:

While abstract art is devoid of any detailing, photorealism is the complete opposite. The goal of a photorealistic painter is to match a picture perfectly. Even with close observation, you wouldn't be able to spot a slight difference between the photo and the painting. Different painters use different techniques for creating such paintings. Richard Estes and Ralph Goings are a few popular names in this art style.

The Impressionism Style:

When you'll see a painting made in this style, you'll be able to comprehend the object easily. However, the object would have a unique vibrant feature. Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet are the two biggest artist in the impressionism style.

Conclusion

There are various painting styles. Apart from these, you can take a look at cultural painting styles too. Having such knowledge can help you create a unique style of your own.
