How to Paint Using One Color

There are different kinds of paintings. The styles and techniques can have a huge impact on the appearance of an artwork. One of those styles is of monochromatic paintings. These paintings are made with only one color. The one color could be any but with its different shades, the painting is created with full effectiveness. One can have plenty of effects with one color and its numerous shades.

The simplicity of these artworks makes them attractive. Moreover, the right execution of the techniques can help you achieve a greater result. Before you begin, you should determine the kind of painting you will be creating. You could be creating an abstract painting or a realistic one. However, if you are creating a one color painting for the first time, it is recommended to use an object or image as an inspiration. It will be easier for you to work on the task with a reference image.

This doesn't mean that you can't create an abstract image with one color. You can create an abstract artwork too but it will require some practice.

Create a Gradient

To begin with, you will need to create a gradient of the same color. For starters, you can choose one of the primary colors. The primary colors are red, yellow and blue. You will need to mix the color with white for getting the lighter shades of the same. Remember to create mixtures of significant sizes to ensure you have sufficient supply of that shade. That is so because it will be difficult for you to get the exact shade later.

You can mix the color with white and then create around 3 to 4 different mixtures. This way, you will have 4 to 5 different colors, including the original shade of the color. You can then begin working on the painting.

Use a Simplistic Image

For reference, you should use a simplistic image. An image with high level of detailing will be too complex for this task. You can choose a landscape too if you like. The reference image will be used for inspiration and it is not necessary for you to replicate the exact object in your painting. You can create rough shapes of the object and have an idea to work with.

When you have a rough sketch ready to be worked on, you should mark the areas with a number or name to determine the shade going there. The different shades can lead to confusion and therefore, you should fixate the application of the colors first. This way you will be able to complete the painting with full efficiency.

Complete the Artwork

Once you have determined the placement of colors and mixed the different shades, you can start working on the painting. With everything pre-determined, you will not have to worry about the final product too.

Conclusion

One color paintings have their own set of qualities. They look simple yet attractive. The above tips should have helped you in this regard.
